Detailed In-Depth Review

As proud owners of this excellent freeze dryer we are in the unique position to be able to share a comprehensive rundown of the benefits, pros and cons, tips etc.  With the popularity of homesteading and food preparation positively booming, let’s take a deep dive into the Harvest Right Home Freeze Dryer so you can better decide if it’s the right home freeze dryer for you!

Ease of Use

The Harvest Right freeze dryer is extremely easy to use. A few quick settings to start it off and it does the rest by itself.

The entire freeze drying process is automated and goes through the entire process of freeze drying without requiring any action on our part.  The highly intelligent built-in sensors know exactly when the food is properly freeze-dried and the process complete.

I have used a lot of applicances and devices over the years and can attest to the fact that Harvest Right engineers went above and beyond to make this freeze dryer user friendly and easy to use for non technical folks.

Harvest Right’s compact and efficient Home Freeze Dryer allows a large volume of food to be freeze-dried at any one time.

Harvest Right Freeze Dryer Front View

Affordability and Long Term Savings

Harvest Right has straight up created the world’s first high-quality, affordable home freeze dryer.

I have ordered freeze dried foods from companies that do the dry freezing process and ship your product to you and while it works fine, it is more expensive over time and you have to sometimes wait in line. Our home freeze dryer is a better (waaaay better) and more convenient solution.

It’s difficult to gauge exactly how much money we’re saving on outsourcing our freeze drying needs but I’d estimate we would have already spent as much as our Harvest Right unit cost.

The fact that we use it a lot more than when we outsourced it AND for almost everything from fruits, veggies and meat products only means our savings will only grow over time.

Our favorite foods to freeze dry

While nearly every type of food can be freeze-dried, including meat, cheese, fruits, vegetables, and dairy (entire meals can be freeze-dried for short or longterm storage) we do have our favorites!

Fruit is perfect for freeze drying and we do it often. Freeze dried blueberries and strawberries are super yummy on cereal! Freeze dried fruit is delicious and easy to prepare. From apples to bananas to berries of all kinds to watermelons, all you need to do is cut it into good-sized pieces that fit onto your trays.

Veggies also freeze dry extremely well. From tomatoes to peas to carrots to avocados, we find they’re best preserved raw, and freeze dried in slices roughly half an inch thick.

Chicken, turkey, pork, seafood, and red meats are perfect for the freeze drying process. We like to freeze dry both raw and cooked meats and we find they both freeze dry perfectly.

To our surprise, eggs can also be freeze dried either raw or cooked. Cheese, meat, and vegetables can be mixed in with the eggs prior to drying. Raw, freeze-dried eggs
are terrific for baking and can also be used to make great omelettes and scrambie eggs!

Freeze-dried yogurt is simply delicious. All the flavors and types we have tried dry well. Even ice cream and ice cream sandwiches can be freeze-dried!

Convenience and Flexibility

One major reason we decided to freeze dry our own food is to guarantee that the food we prepare and eat is free of preservatives.

We grown many of our own vegetables so it’s important for us to know that what we preserve is as natural and healthy as possible.

Canned or packaged foods or even commercially produced freeze-dried foods come with whatever ingredients the producer used in the preservation process. We simply prefer to know what we’re eating.

One of the key advantages of preserving your own food through freeze drying is that you can avoid these food additives and know that the food you choose to preserve is exactly what you will want to eat months (or even years) into the future.

Why would I want to freeze dry food?

Changing consumer food goals and values have led to an increasing number of folks seeking nutrition from organic, high-quality food sources with labels that make sense. Emergency use and planning have also become popular topics for people in these last few years.

Freeze dried foods are minimally processed and thus can contain only clean ingredients, free from synthetic, artificial, and highly processed sources or ingredients.

Freeze-dried fruits, vegetables and meats retain the nutritional value far better than other drying or canning methods, further supporting consumers’ desire for nutrition from whole foods.

Freeze drying also preserves the true color and shape of the original raw materials, reassuring consumers they are actually eating real fruits, vegetables and meats in their diets. The intense flavor and aroma of freeze-dried ingredients most closely resemble those of the original raw material.

Freeze drying vs dehydrating or canning

Many people think freeze-dried products and dehydrated products are the same thing. While they are both beneficial for long-term storage and emergency kits there are some key difference which are worth outlining here.

  • Nutrition: Freeze-dried food retains most of the original vitamins and minerals from fresh produce, while the dehydration process can easily break down these nutrients. Many vitamins and nutrients are destroyed by the heat used in the canning process.
  • Taste: Taste is subjective but the general concensus is that freeze dried food tastes better than dehydrated food. If you’ve ever tasted dehydrated food you may have well been put off by the taste. Dehydrating can change the flavour of foods for the worse. Freeze drying doesn’t detract from the flavour at all but rather retains virtualy all of the flavour and nutrients in the original food, unlike dehydration.
  • Shelf life: Moisture content is a key factor when gauging shelf life. Freeze-dried food can last between 25 and 30 years while dehydrated products can last between 5 and 7 years. Canning shelf life is usually between 3 and 5 years.
  • Moisture: Freeze-drying removes about 98 percent of the moisture in the food, while dehydration removes only about 90 percent.

Final Verdict

Our freeze dryer runs pretty much every day and we love how easy it is to use. The final product always comes out great and I cannot recommend this freeze dryer enough – it is simply perfect.
